For ÖBB, the market for sustainable investments is an effective instrument in the fight against climate change. With sustainable financing, the company wants to underpin its role as “Austria’s No. 1 climate protection company”.
imug rating conducts Sustainability Ratings for five subsidiaries on behalf of ÖBB. In doing so, imug rating evaluates the areas of sustainability management, products and services as well as controversies according to common industry standards.
The Austrian federal railways (Österreichische Bundesbahnen, ÖBB), headquartered in Vienna, are Austria’s largest mobility service provider with 42,000 employees and 287 million passengers per year.
imug rating was commissioned to create external and independent Sustainability Ratings of the ÖBB companies ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG, ÖBB-Produktion GmbH, ÖBB-Technische Services GmbH, Österreichische Postbus AG and Rail Cargo Austria AG. The creation of the ratings was carried out in coordination with the company. In a first step, imug rating analysed the sustainability performance based on publicly available information. Internal documents provided by the company were included in the analysis additionally. Last missing information was collected by means of a questionnaire. The assessments are updated annually.
The methodology and areas of assessment of a Sustainability Rating follow international guiding principles for sustainable development: companies should operate responsibly, achieve positive sustainability impacts and prevent risky or controversial behaviour. The analysis approach follows the principle of materiality and addresses specific industry challenges as well as opportunities. For mobility service providers, for example, the focus is on measures for CO2 reduction, but also on operational and occupational safety. The core business of rail transport for passengers and goods is considered positive from a sustainability perspective.
The sustainability performance of the five ÖBB subsidiaries is rated as “very good”.
